Why I’ve stopped wearing perfume

About 18 months ago my husband and I stopped wearing perfume and after-shave/cologne. We realised that although we smelt great, we were actually doing harm to our bodies and the bodies of people around us who were breathing the smells in. Perfume (and cologne but I will keep referring to perfume only in this blog post) is full of so many toxic chemicals yet we plaster it all over us. Why? It really is not worth sacrificing your health to smell good….especially when there are alternatives so you can still smell good!!

In this blog post I will be looking at some of the main ingredients found in perfume and what we can do to smell even better than before without plastering ourselves with toxins.

There are two particular ingredients that we need to be especially aware of in perfumes. These are parabens and phthalates.

1. Parabens

Parabens are a synthetic preservative which can interfere with the function of the endocrine system. This means that they are hormone disruptors. They have also been shown to cause learning difficulties, immune problems, developmental disorders and reproductive issues in children. A 2004 report in the Journal of Applied toxicology showed that parabens may also play a role in certain types of cancer such as breast cancer because they act like oestrogen. They have also been shown to have an effect on the male reproductive system such as lowering sperm count.

Unfortunately parabens are cheap and an effective preservative to stop fungus, bacteria and other microbes growing in your beauty products in the bathroom. Prior to using parabens companies were using formaldehyde so the industry feels that things are improving. Even though there is a long way to go, public pressure means that companies are starting looking at alternatives.

2. Phthalates

Phthalates are a synthetic preservative reported to be carcinogenic (cancer causing). They have also been shown to cause diabetes, reproductive issues (low sperm count, birth defects, and early reproductive development) as well as breathing issues in children with a history of respiratory problems.

Phthalates are often found listed as ‘fragrance’ which is a term used to give perfume its scent. Perfume companies usually purchase fragrance mixtures from specialised companies and then make their own special scent, meaning it is hard for the consumer to know exactly what is in it. Results from an Environmental Working Group (EWG) study has shown 72% of products with ‘fragrance’ listed contain phthalates. Unfortunately as fragrance does not have to be clearly labelled, there is no real way for a consumer to make an informed decision when purchases these products.

A fragrance safety concern report stated that up to 95% of synthetic chemicals used to make fragrance are derived from petrochemicals which according to the Envionmental Protection Agency can cause cancer, birth defects, nervous system disorders, asthma, and allergies.

The only safe answer? Don’t purchase them. But don’t worry. You don’t have to miss out. You can make your own PURE-fumes using 100% pure essential oils. Please be careful with the essential oil that you choose.  A 2010 study on ‘green products’ noted that just as many toxic chemicals can be emitted. Ensure that you choose an essential oil that is not processed with a solvent

This is one of my favourite home-made blends:

Self Love

4 drops Bergamot

4 drops Lavender

2 drops Ylang Ylang

2 drops Geranium

Topped up with carrier oil

Whisper-Blend for Women

Another favourite of mine is DoTERRA essential oil Whisper Blend for Women. A combination of bergamot, ylang ylang, patcholi, vanilla, jasmine, cinnamon, labdanum, vetiver, Hawaiian sandalwood, cocoa and rose it is sure to turn heads wherever you go. And it does! I often get comments whenever I wear this blend, as do many other people that I know.  The beauty of this blend is that it smells very different on each person that wears it. It is already diluted in fractionated coconut oil and is very gentle on the skin. More information about this blend can be found here.

If you are ready to ditch the toxic chemicals on your skin, and want to find out more about how to buy these essential oils or buy a ready-made roller bottle blend, so you can smell like the Divine Goddess (Or God!) that you are, please contact me to find out how. Blends are available for both men and women.
